Do you want to make your dog popular on social media? Depending on your definition of popular and why you want your dog to be noticed online, there are many dedicated ways to make it happen. Here are several ways to make your dog popular on social media, step by step:

Determine a Social Media Goal(s)

Why do you want your dog to be recognized on social media? Is it for a hobby? To network with other dog lovers and dogs online? To work with brands and make money? To call attention to a rescue or shelter? Maybe a little of all of these? In order to start on the path to popularity for your darling doggy, you need a social media goal.

Pick a Platform

Examples of social media platforms include Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Pinterest (although Pinterest is viewed as a search engine). Decide which social media platform(s) you want to use to grow your dog’s presence. Each platform works differently and has a different vibe, message, and feel to it.

For example, Instagram is an online photo sharing service where you upload photos, apply effects or filters if desired, and then engage with other people who share similar interests. All of this is done through hashtags. Do you have some spare time to devote to growing your account(s)? You need not be everywhere: Pick and choose the platforms that you want to grow.

Start a Dog Blog

People start blogs for a variety of reasons, and there are thousands of pet bloggers giving a voice to their dogs. If you like writing about your  dog’s adventures, have a passion for dogs in general, and/or want to share your thoughts or views to help pet parents in general, consider blogging. I started out blogging about pet-friendly travel and evolved into working in the pet industry.

One of the catalysts for putting your pet blogging dreams into action is BlogPaws. BlogPaws is a social media company founded in 2009 that brings the online pet community together with yearly conferences that are pet friendly  (pets are even welcome in the classrooms.) Nowadays, pet bloggers are monetizing: Making money by engaging with companies in the pet industry.

A dog blog accompanies the social media platform(s) and then you rely on online traffic to the social media sites and to your blog. It’s a symbotic relationship if done right.

Instagram Tips

One of the hottest social media properties these days is Instagram, especially for pet lovers and pets themselves.  Instagram was one of the hottest social media platforms of 2016, and 2017 shows no signs of slowing in the Insta-Space.  Here are 4 of my favorite tips for gaining more followers on Instagram. Remember, the name of the game is social. Put the “social” in social media and get to know people, engage with them, follow them, comment on their posts, and use up to 30 hashtags in each photo you post. Do not spam folks, buy followers, nor ask for people to follow you back.

Twitter Tips

Twitter is a fun, 140-character playground to unleash your inner puppy and one of my favorite forms of social media. Tweeting is easy and fun and is a great way to connect with like-minded people and their pets.

Once you’ve learned how to tweet , first and foremost, follow other pet people. It might seem time consuming and daunting, but if your plan is to create an online persona for your pooch, Twitter needs to be a part of it. Brands have become savvy to what dog parents want, and as a PR and social media guru in the pet industry, I can attest firsthand (and paw) that tweets by pets are being watched.

Most Tuesdays at 8 pm EDT, you can connect with other pet people at #BlogPawsChat. Hashtags are a trackable shared way to gather under one “cyber umbrella” where everything can be tracked. Remember the days of online chat rooms? Hashtags are very similar but privy to the whole world and anyone with a Twitter account.

Attend the BlogPaws Conference in Person

Despite its many layers and interconnections, the online world has its shortcomings; namely, that in person connection can only be fostered and grown by one way: In person, of course!

In 2010, this gal and her dog walked into a conference in Ohio and had no idea the trajectory her life would take thereafter. I knew I wanted to work online, from home, and grow a blog along with my passion for dogs.

The BlogPaws 2017 Conference is a 3-day event jam-packed with educational sessions led by top professionals, networking opportunities with influencers, a busy exhibit hall, exciting brand events, more influencers, and lots of pets. Pets remain at the heart of everything BlogPaws does. Our pet-friendly conferences invite all pets everywhere in the event space.

Your ticket to BlogPaws includes entrance into the exhibit hall, all sessions (except as noted), all keynote sessions, events, the Nose-to-Nose awards, and all meals per the agenda.

BlogPaws has always been and will always be about and for the bloggers and influencers: those who want to learn, grow, network, and take their blog to the “next level.”

BlogPaws connects brands to bloggers and those who want to monetize, form relationships, and turn a passion for pets into a way to make money.
